5 Things New Runners Should Know.
Are you nervous about starting your running journey?
Well you’re in the right place for solid advice. Yes, from the outside looking in, running can be extremely intimidating for new runners. But I promise it’s nowhere near as difficult as it looks.
Like everything in life, you have to start somewhere. The beginning is the start line, but thankfully when it comes to running there’s no finish line.
Think about the first time you went roller skating or rode a bike. Remember, it didn’t start off easy but as you continued at it you got better each time.
It’s the exact same process with running.
I’ve listed 5 things new runners should know before they start running.
5 Things New Runners Should Know
Stop Making Excuses
Boom! This is the perfect place to start for new runners. “I’m too slow.” “I’m out of shape.” “I don’t have the right clothing.” “It’s too cold.” “It’s too hot.” The list of excuses can go on and on. The truth is, you’ll never start running if you keep making excuses.
Running is literally one of those things you have to just start doing. Don’t overthink it, just do it! Seriously, make sure you’re hydrated, stretch, grab some running shoes, and go! It’s that simple.
Consistency Is Key
No matter what you do, be consistent! When you first start running you may feel defeated or intimidated, but don’t allow those initial feelings to discourage you. As you continue to run, you will notice improvements in your performance. I promise!
It’s A Process
Trust the process! This is extremely important to remember. When I first started running I could barely run a mile without feeling like it was the end of the world. Seriously! I participated in one of Nike’s Boot Camp training classes, and we had to run one mile. I finished last and was completely out of breath. But that was five years ago, and now I can run seven miles without stopping.
It was a process. I didn’t go from barely running one mile to seven miles overnight. I conquered a one mile run first, and eventually my body started craving for more runs. Before I knew it, I was running five miles. If you stay consistent and trust the process, you will see amazing results in your running journey.
Looks Are Not Important
This should be number one because people use looks as an excuse not to run. “I want to look like a runner.” or “I want to look cute while running.” I’m sure you’ve heard someone say that before. There’s nothing wrong with looking good in the latest apparel, tech, and footwear during your runs, but don’t ever let it stop you from running.
Just make sure you are wearing running shoes!
Wear Proper Shoes
Before you start running, make sure to wear proper shoes. What I mean by proper shoes is actual running shoes. If you’re unsure, visit your local running store and ask an employee. When I first started running I made the mistake of running in basketball shoes. My reason: they run in basketball, right?
It’s not the same. At all! So do yourself a huge favor and get real running shoes. It’s an investment that your feet and legs will appreciate.
